From iconic Gaudi buildings and relics from the Roman Empire to cutting-edge modern art galleries and shops; this diverse city promises to inspire and astound you at every turn.
So as you start to make your travel plans for the rest of the year, you may want to consider spending some time in Barcelona. Read on for some of my favorite things to see and do while on vacation in Barcelona.
1. Visit the Sagrada Familia
The Sagrada Familia is a must-see attraction in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudi, it is a stunning masterpiece that is still under construction.
Now I know that you might think looking at an unfinished building could be boring, but hear me out. The construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882, and it is still under construction more than a century later.
Gaudi designed a grand vision for the basilica that included several towers, facades, and intricate details that were not completed during his lifetime.
After Gaudi's death, several architects took over the project and tried to complete it according to Gaudi's original plans. However, the construction was interrupted during the Spanish Civil War.
Since, multiple architects and builders have been working to complete the Sagrada Familia according to Gaudi's original plans.
The construction of the basilica is entirely funded by private donations, and the completion date is finally estimated to be around 2026, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. Talk about a massive honoring and celebration there will be!
2. Stroll down Las Ramblas
This is the most famous street in Barcelona. A pedestrian boulevard lined with shops, cafes, and street performers.
“Las Ramblas is a tree-lined boulevard featuring a wide array of architectural delights, beautifully decorated flower stalls, and particularly talented (and certified) human statues. Foodies will definitely enjoy the tapa joints at Mercat de la Boqueria, considered by many to be the best gourmet food market in Europe.” (Lonely Planet, 2023)
This is all part of what is known as The Gothic Quarter which is a maze of narrow streets and medieval buildings. It is the oldest part of the city and has a rich history. With so many things to get into a few “must-see” in this area are:

3. Casa Mila
Barcelona is home to some of the world's most beautiful and awe-inspiring architecture, and Gaudi's Casa Mila is no exception. Located in the city center, this iconic landmark stands out among its bustling surroundings. Its unique shape and strong lines gives it a distinct character that makes it both striking and captivating. Not only does it have an impressive exterior, but its interior also surprises visitors with an abundance of natural light and sweeping views from its large balconies over the lively city below. Take a visit to Casa Mila and you will soon understand why it is one of Barcelona’s must-see attractions.
4. Visit The Beach
Barcelona has a great beach culture with a long stretch of golden sand at Barceloneta, which is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.
If you’re looking for specific sports, paddle boarding, windsurfing, and kayaking are the main ones. Equipment can be rented on-site. Beach volleyball, walking, or jogging are also amazing activities to do on the beach. There are several restaurants that are a must-eat:

5. Explore the Picasso Museum
Instead of waiting for an exhibit to come to you locally, you have the chance to visit some of Pablo Picasso's great pieces at this museum. The Picasso Museum collection includes Picasso's paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and drawings.
To name of few of his famous masterpieces that are there:

6. National Art Museum of Catalonia
If you're planning a trip to Barcelona, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) should definitely be on your list of must-see attractions. Located in the stunning Palau Nacional, this museum is home to an impressive collection of Catalan art from the Romanesque period to the mid-20th century.
The MNAC's collection includes works by some of Catalonia's most famous artists, including Gaudi and Picasso, as well as lesser-known but equally talented painters and sculptors. But it's not just the artwork that makes the MNAC so special - the building itself is a work of art, with its grand staircase and magnificent views over Barcelona.
Whether you're an art lover or simply appreciate beauty in all its forms, a visit to the MNAC is sure to be a highlight of your trip to this vibrant city.
7. Check out the Magic Fountain
The Magic Fountain offers a wonderful display of light and water, with jets of water choreographed to music and illuminated with colorful lights.
One of the best things about the Magic Fountain is that it is completely free to enjoy. You can watch the shows from the surrounding plaza or from the steps of the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
The show takes place in the evening and at night, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere that is perfect for families, a date, or a night out with friends while visiting.
8. Visit the Montserrat Monastery
The Montserrat Monastery is a Benedictine monastery located in the mountains outside of Barcelona. It has a beautiful basilica, museum, and stunning views.
Here you can see The Basilica which is the main church of the monastery and features a beautiful interior with stunning artwork and decorations. It also houses the famous statue of the Black Madonna.
You can ride The Funicular which is a scenic cable car ride that takes you up the mountain. You’re also able to hike and listen to The Escolania de Montserrat. They are the oldest and most renowned boys' choir in Europe. While there, don’t forget to visit The Montserrat Museum. It houses works by famous artists such as Picasso, Dali, and Monet.
9. Nightlife
Barcelona has a vibrant nightlife scene with plenty of bars, clubs, and music venues to choose from. Whether you're looking for a high-energy club experience, a fun rooftop pool party by the beach, or a live music venue, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are just a few:
● Jamboree Club: For 50 years, Jamboree Club has been part of Barcelona's unique culture. Open every night since 1960, it's no surprise that this popular La Rambla venue is vibrant and bustling with international music, hip hop and R&B. For such a low entrance fee, the club is always full and the performances never fail to leave guests mesmerized!
● Harlem Jazz Club: Harlem Jazz Club is an institution in Barcelona's Gothic neighborhood. Jazz lovers, music enthusiasts, and performers all enjoy the live gigs that are held nearly every day of the week. It's an intimate and funky spot to listen to local and high caliber music over a cheap and tasty drink. Once the gig is over, DJs create an atmosphere that get everyone on the dance floor!
● Hotel W, the Wet Deck: For an unforgettable day-time pool party in the summer, step into the W Hotel, located at the beachfront of Barcelona's famous Barceloneta boardwalk. The luxurious terrace here offers breathtaking views and the amazing cocktails prepared by their expert mixologists will surely impress you.
